I would like to buy some old Chessman comics.

Does anybody have some or know where they are for sale?

Chessman was the creation of International Master John Watson. I
believe that the comic books were published by Bob Dudley.

If you have to ask, AND get curious! tsk tsk tsk - it's your sense of
humour Sam, or lack thereof. Don't worry about it & happy new year..

I don't have any of Watson's, but a few years back I bought a couple
chess comic books by IM Michael Brooks at the Lawrence Open. I came
across one of those somewhere the other day that I still have.

Don't know where mine are. Probably in a box somewhere. Is the
author still around? If I can get permission I'm willing to scan and
web them. They were fun.

Issue number 2 is sold regularly on ebay, going for about $4. I would like to get
issue #1 if anyone knows how to do so.

I have just obtained Chessman #2 which I purchased on eBay.

The subtitle is "Treachery in Transylvania!" The plot is that Chessman
is invited to a tourment in Dubl Czech, by Icepick Swasson, the
President of FIDO.

Although it is quite good, it is not the best one. I think that #1 or
#3 were better.

I believe that there were only three issues. Does anybody know where I
can get the other two?

I am trying to think of good cartoon characters for our modern chess
players.

For example:

Anand rides an elephant.
Leko sleeps in a coffin and comes back from the dead.
Too bad Gufeld is dead. He is the perfect KGB Agent.
Too bad Kamsky does not play any more. He and Rustam would make
perfect cartoon characters.

Any ideas?

Who wrote the Chessman comics?
Chessman Comics were written by International Master John Watson. The
art work was done by different artists. The one I have has artwork by
Svein G. Myreng, with thanks to Chris Hendrickson.

Publisher was Chess Enterprises, Inc. Coroapolis, PA.

It has a lot of cute ideas. For example, one of the comic book
characters was Icepick Swasson, the President of FIDO. The comic book
was published in 1982 and at that time the real President of FIDE was
Fredrik Olafsson of Iceland. (Olafsson was defeated for re-election
later the same year).

I am trying to think of real chess players who would make good comic
book characters. This is not easy. For example, Kramnik is out. He is
a colorless person with a dull playing style. On the other hand, Steve
Doyle would be ideal. Anybody who has met him will tell you that Doyle
looks like a cartoon character. Yasser Seirawan, the suave
sophisticated always immaculate and perfectly dressed with the
beautiful blond Dutch wife would be a good cartoon character.
Similarly, Kirsan and his sidekick Polina are the perfect "Boris and
Natasha" of the chess world. I am sure that Ashley would make a good
cartoon character, but we would have to be careful about that one.
Same thing about Judit Polgar. Ruslan Ponomariev, always calling
himself the world champion and demanding money but refusing to play,
would make a good cartoon character. We could always add Jackie Beers
being chased down the street with a hammer.Come to think of it,
Goichberg would make a good cartoon character.

Any more ideas???? How about Eric Schiller?

Sam, You are too modest. HOW ABOUT SAM SLOAN?! (You were waiting for that,
weren't you?).

Incidentally, I played Chris Hendrickson in the US Amateur in Tempe, AZ in,
I think, 1976. She hasn't played for a while, has she?

I'm not familiar with the Jackie Beers/hammer story. What's that about?

Jackie Beers was a chess expert, close friend of the boob, slightly
crazy and still to thus day locked up in the nut house as far as
anyone knows.

Another more famous chess player chased him down the street with a
hammer but, sad to relate, did not catch him.

Sorry, but I will not say anything more about this.

He's been seen on the street occasionally over the past decade. "Locked up in
the nut house" probably doesn't apply, although that may be due to his advanced
age more than anything else.

Dear Mr. Musicant,

Heil Dubya!

Jack Beers (Despite Scam Spam's pretence st familiarity, I never heard
him called "Jackie".) was a USCF Expert who was active in the 1960s
and early 1970s. I did not know him well. (I did not want to know
him at all, but we both travelled in NYC chess circles.)

He was considered weird and there were several stories about him and
his interactions with others in the chess world. If I don't have
personal knowledge, I tend to disregard them, especially because I
know that, in our VERY sick society, anyone who is not "one of us"
easily can become the subject of all kinds of lying stories. (In my
opinion, Jack Beers's reality was different from that of those whom
most of us consider "normal".)

I last saw him in the 1990s on Central Park West and 97th Street. I
greeted him, but he ignored me completely. It may have been that he
was "in his own world". I don't remember the source or the time, but
I heard a few years ago that Jack beers had died.

Heute Uhmuhrikkka, Afghanistan und Irak. Morgen die ganze Welt!

Uhmuhrikkka, Uhmuhrikkka über Alles!

(The more information that comes out about the attacks on the Twin
Towers and the Pentagon of 11 September 2001, the more it appears that
those attacks were organized by the rulers of the United States and
were intended to have the same effect on the people of the United
States that the Reichstag fire had on the people of Germany in 1933.)

Thank you for the details. FWIW, in "Bobby Fischer vs the Rest of the
World," Brad Darrach's book on the 1972 match, he is introduced as "Jackie"
Beers.

Beers came down to play in one of our early Atlanta Opens back in the 1960's.
He struck me as the archetype New York street tough guy.

The reason you saw him at 97th Street and Central Park West is that he
lives in a half-way house on 100th Street near Central Park West.

As far as I know he is still alive. Somebody I know saw him two or
three years ago. However, he has been banned from all the chess clubs
again.

Hi, All,

Jack Beers is my uncle, and I respect everyone's right to freedom o
speech (I'm a writer and English professor); I just wanted to remin
you that he's a real person, and he has people who care about him.
Some of your posts have been incredibly insensitive, such as sayin
that it was unfortunate that he wasn't caught in the hammer incident.
People with mental illnesses are people too, even if we don'
understand their actions.

We are certainly interested in Jackie Beers, the chess player and best
friend of Bobby Fischer.

Is he still alive because there is a widespread rumor that he has died?

If he is alive, I would like to go see him.

Hi, Sam,

I'll have to see if my dad (Jack's younger brother) would like to pos
any information. I just wanted to remind you that Jack is a person
not just a possible character for Chessman comic books and that yo
were being insensitive. I met Jack only once for a brief visit when
was about fourteen or fifteen. My dad would be the only person I woul
know with information about him.

This is what my dad wrote me this morning:

"As for the chess blog about Jack, Adria told us about it a few years
ago and mom contacted some people in NYC. They told us that saw hi
recently
and they'd give Jack our message if he wanted to contact us.
We haven't heard anything since.
