Woman's Equality Act offers Libertarians an Opportunity

The Governor of New York State has endorsed proposed legislation known
as "The Woman's Equality Act".

The Woman's Equality Act is filled with provisions which are very,
very bad from a Libertarian point of view, yet traditional politicians
will be afraid to take a stand against it.

Provisions of this act tell employers whom they can hire and how much
they must pay, it tells landlords who they must rent to, it tells
prosecutors what crimes they must prosecute.

As you will see everything on this list are things that Libertarians
must oppose. This set of proposed laws is the worst of the worst.

Since Republicans dare not oppose these measures, we Libertarians
should become the leaders in the opposition to this.

If you do not understand what is wrong with this, then you do not
understand the Libertarian philosophy well.

The claim of domestic violence is one easily made, rarely proven.

Let us say for example a woman has a history of getting into violent
fights with her boyfriend and the police are often called and arrests
are made.

The boyfriend gets out, moves back in and a few weeks or months later
the same thing happens,

We know from experience that women who get in these situations tend to
do so repeatedly.

So, finally the landlord or the other tenants decide to kick them out
or they want to move to a new place.

Should a law be passed prohibiting a landlord from doing that?

That is what seems to be proposed by this legislation, and this is
just one possible example.

The truth is: (from their website stated goals)
The Women’s Equality Agenda will protect victims of domestic
violence from housing discrimination by amending the New York State
Human Rights Law to make it illegal, on the basis of victim status,
to:

refuse to sell, rent, or lease;
represent as unavailable what is available for inspection,
sale, rental, or lease;
alter terms, conditions, privileges of sale, rental, or lease
of any housing; or
ask about a prospective tenant’s or buyer’s status as a victim
of domestic violence unless that inquiry is solely for the purpose of
assistance rather than hindrance in obtaining housing.

Notice the parts in bold. How is that against our typical stances?
Why should that status prevent them from receiving housing, especially
if: Many victims face unique challenges in seeking stability and
safety after escaping abuse, including homelessness and inadequate
access to shelter and housing resources. (their website again).

The rest of the bullets are already illegal in the fairness laws
about housing anyway. In no way do these points say who you "MUST"
rent to; just that a landlord cannot discriminate based on being a
victim of domestic violence. A landlord can always put someone else in
their property for the same amount with just cause.

I fight on facebook for our cause constantly rather than here in
the newsgroup. Views like yours about laws like this make it harder to
show the country that our government's role should be about protecting
people's freedoms from being abused by others - including the freedom
to have safe harbor after being physically abused by their partner.
